In this tutorial, we will see how to enable tabs in Windows 11 File Explorer: a feature that Windows users have been waiting for for ages! Moreover, many people expected to have access to this feature following the release of Windows 11 22H2 on September 20, but this was not the case!
Microsoft has released the cumulative update KB5019509 ! This is an optional update at this time, and it enables this feature in File Explorer! Microsoft officially announced it through an article on its site, where the American company also mentions other new features (see this article). Subsequently, the Redmond firm should reintroduce the “Task Manager” entry in the context menu which appears when you right click on the taskbar.
Note : to take advantage of this new feature, you must be using Windows 11 22H2. If you are using Windows 11 21H2, you should upgrade your machine to the latest version first.
II. Install update KB5019509
First, you need to install the update KB5019509 on your Windows 11 computer. To do this, simply go to: Settings > Windows Update then run an update search.
Update KB5019509 should be offered. Click on “Download and install“.

III. Enable tabs in File Explorer
After installing this new update for Windows 11, and after restarting, File Explorer is able to handle multiple tabs! There are no options to enable, this is done automatically. In Explorer, just click on the “+” to add a new tab: it works the same way as in your favorite web browser!
