When WhatsApp goes down, the news quickly goes around the world: it must be said that with its two billion active users per month, the instant messaging service weighs heavily… This Tuesday, October 25, WhatsApp suffered a new global blackout. What happened ?
Looking at the DownDetector site, there were numerous reported outages for WhatsApp this morning starting at 8:53 a.m., peaking at 9:38 a.m. when there were over 9,000 reports. At the same time, the hashtag “#WhatsAppDown” quickly spread on Twitter, which made it possible to read many testimonials from users.
Indeed, in practice, it was no longer possible to send messages. Either way, the app opens and the messages are submitted but WhatsApp fails to send them. That’s not all, since he was not no no longer possible to make audio or video calls. Both on smartphone and on computer with the WhatsApp application.
This outage did not only affect France, but the different regions of the world. It’s a global outage that affected WhatsApp. Moreover, Meta quickly communicated on the subject: “ We are aware that some people are having difficulty messaging right now and we are working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as soon as possible. “. For now, WhatsApp did not explain the reasons for this outage which seems to be a server connection problem.
Currently, there is a gradual return to normal. Although some users may still encounter some difficulties, WhatsApp has been operational again since around 11:30 a.m.. This is not WhatsApp’s first global outage: I remember an outage in October 2021 which affected WhatsApp but also Facebook, Instagram and Messenger. Moreover, during this complicated evening for Meta, more than 70 million people had turned to Telegram to continue to communicate while waiting (or not) for the return of WhatsApp.
Otherwise, apart from WhatsApp, there is also Olvid: a French alternative certified by ANSSI.
