Cybercriminals have managed to compromise the website and the Twitter account of an American daily newspaper: the New York Post. Let’s do a check in.
Even if every day, the New York Post is a newspaper available in paper format, there is also a website that allows you to benefit from press articles in digital format. On Thursday, cybercriminals compromised the newspaper’s official website and Twitter account. Moreover, hackers have put online some objectionable tweets and articles towards politicians… But the newspaper itself announced the hack via this tweet: “The New York Post has been hacked. We are currently investigating the cause“. Another message read: “This morning, we immediately removed vile and objectionable content from our website and social media accounts.“
These offensive headlines and tweets were directed at American politicians, from the Mayor of New York to the President of the United States himself:
- Joe Biden, President of the United States,
- Hunter Biden, Joe Biden’s son
- Eric Adams, Maire de New- York,
- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, MP,
- Kathy Hochul, Governor of New York,
- Gregg Abbot, Governor of Texas,
- Adam Kinzinger, MP
Here is an example of a tweet (I’ll let you do the translation yourself…). There would also have been tweets to demand the assassination of Joe Biden.
At this time, we do not know how the compromise of the website took place. Nevertheless, hackers probably exploited a vulnerability in the CMS used by the New York Post. As for the Twitter account, it may have been manipulated directly through the website since usually the two are linked (for the automatic distribution of articles, for example).
Bleeping Computer reports on a similar attack that hit Fast Company magazine’s website last month. In the end, the hackers managed to compromise the website thanks to a flaw in WordPress, the CMS used by Fast Company.
