Nouveautés Synology Octobre 2022

NAS DS923+, WRX560 router and DSM 7.2

At a global event, Synology unveiled new features, including a NAS, a WiFi router, and a future major version for the system: DSM 7.2.

NAS : Synology DS923+

In 2023, Synology will launch several NAS models, and this is the model DS923+ unveiled on the occasion of this event which launches hostilities since it will be on the market in a few weeks. This model incorporates 5 emplacements for disk, 4 Go to RAMas well as a processor Ryzen R1600 with 2 hearts. This should allow better performance compared to the current generation.

On the network connectivity side, one would expect theappearance of one or more 2.5 Gb/s Ethernet ports… Most non, Synology ignores it. Too bad, because it appeals to users, and it is already offered on several competing models, notably from ASUSTOR and QNAP. Regarding the DS923+, it integrates only 2 RJ45 1 Gbit/s ports even if it is possible toadd a 10 Gbit/s port by adding the E10G22-T1-Mini module (which costs half an arm).

The advertised price is 529 euros.

Routeur Wi-Fi : Synology WRX560

Synology continues to expand its range of WiFi routers in order to break into this market definitively, this time with the WRX560 model. Based on SRM systemlike the other models already on the market, it comes to the market as a new WiFi 6 router, like the RT6600AX. I insist on the fact that it is indeed a WiFi 6 model and not WiFi 6E which is the current standard.

For Wi-Fi antennas, we are entitled to 4×4 MIMO on the 5 GHz frequency band and 2×2 MIMO on the 2.4 GHz frequency band. Compatible with WiFi Mesh, you can build a complete network based on compatible devices from Synology.

Regarding the connectors, the WRX560 router integrates 4 Ethernet ports at 1 Gbit/s and a 2.5 Gbit/s port, the latter being useful for people equipped with a NAS with a “multi Gig” port or with a compatible box (like the Freebox Pop, for example). This higher throughput port can be used for WAN or LAN, depending on your needs. It also includes a USB 3.2 Gen1 port.

Personally, the design of this router reminds me of the Netgear Orbi models… Don’t you?

It should be available soon at a price of 250 € including VAT. To be continued.

DSM 7.2

Synology has unveiled its new system for NAS: DSM 7.2. This new version scheduled for the first quarter of 2023 will include some interesting new features. Here is a summary :

  • Multichannel SMB support to improve performance during file transfers (operate several network cards at the same time)
  • Technology WORM (Write once, read multiple), very useful to fight against certain attacks (even an administrator cannot unlock a shared folder on which this option is activated)
  • Hyper Backup will also integrate the notion of immutable backupalong the same lines, which means that the save cannot be modified after it is created
  • Hyper Backup will back up the NAS system by itself, like a bare-metal backup of your case
  • Ability to fully encrypt a volumewhile improving performance over the current encryption system
  • Synology Drive will support machines equipped with the Apple M1 and Apple M2 chips, as well as files on demand under macOS

In addition, Synology is working on improving its Cloud services by adding new features to its “C2” Cloud. For instance, Synology C2 Identity will support authentication without passwords (passwordless) thanks to Windows Hello and Apple Face ID (or Touch ID depending on the device).

What do you think of these novelties? Personally, I appreciate the arrival of WORM and immutable backups because it’s interesting to fight against ransomware!
