Over 20 million downloads for these malicious Android apps

According to McAfee, a malware nicknamed Clicker is present in a dozen Android applications which represent a total of more than 20 million downloads. What are the risks ? And, what are these applications to avoid? Let’s do a check in.

The malware, once in place on the user’s Android device, will simulate queries on websites et clicks on advertisements with the aim of enriching the cybercriminals behind Clicker. On the side of the device, there is an excessive consumption of the network but also of energy, which is felt at the level of autonomy. McAfee researchers point out that Clicker does not take action immediately: it waits at least an hour after installing a malicious application before making the first requests. There is also a random delay between each malicious activity in order to be as discreet as possible.

These are innocuous-looking applications that integrate Clicker, including utilities for the smartphone camera, a note-taking application, a cleaning application to make the device faster, etc. Here is the list of malicious applications provided in the McAfee report:

Even if some applications are not widely downloaded, there are still 6 with more than 1 million downloads on the counter. These statistics are taken from figures published on the Google Play Store.

Clicker does not appear to perform any other malicious actions on your Android device: it does not steal credentials or attempt to extract your data. Its main purpose is to generate money for the benefit of cybercriminals, on the principle mentioned above.
