The first major update of Windows 11 is officially available since this Tuesday, September 20, 2022! This is an opportunity to take stock of the major changes made to Windows 11 22H2.
Note: during the system installation phase, there is no change.
First, Microsoft has made some improvements to the Start menu and taskbar, starting with the return of drag and drop within an open application by positioning itself on its icon in the taskbar. A very useful historical feature, but which no longer worked on Windows 11, and it’s good that it came back! In addition, it will be possible to drag and drop to the lower right corner corresponding to “Display the desktop” in order to copy-paste an item on the desktop directly.
Microsoft Teams users will be able to use two new call-related features. First of all, when a call is in progress and an application is open, for example PowerPoint, it will be possible to do right-click on the icon in the taskbar and then choose “Share this window”.
Within the Start menu, the “Our recommendations” will keep its place, but it will be possible to give it more or less space thanks to several possible layouts. The user will be able to prioritize his pinned applications, or on the contrary, the recommended applications.
The Start menu will also benefit from a new feature allowing the user to create foldersas we could already do on Windows 10.
Second, Microsoft has made improvements to File Explorer. The “Quick access” section is renamed “Home” and she will allowpin files, which I personally find interesting.
The Redmond company has reintegrated an old feature that disappeared in the initial version of Windows 11: the preview of the contents of a folder directly in the thumbnail of the folderdepending on the display you are using of course.
With Windows 11, Microsoft introduced a new feature to arrange windows in multiple configurations. To make it easier to use, especially on a touch screen or with a simple mouse movement, Windows 11 22H2 allows you to view available layouts by dragging the window to the top of the screen. In addition, the Win + Z shortcut provides access to this function.
Windows 11 22H2 will give a more important place to OneDrive since it will be housed directly in the File Explorer interfacetop right, when you are in OneDrive. This new button will provide information on the status of synchronization, but also OneDrive storage. It is an additional shortcut, in addition to the one that is usually in the taskbar.
In addition, the option “Copy as path” which allows you to obtain the access path of a file has its own shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + C.
Small disappointment: the new File Explorer with the ability to create tabs is not integrated into this version of Windows 11!
Microsoft continues to tweak the Windows 11 GUI so that it fully matches the overall Windows 11 theme. ditch the Windows 8 style! Thus, it will be more homogeneous at the system level. Similarly, the music management panel that appears when the session is locked will benefit from a makeover.
Functionality Windows Spotlight which allows to obtain wallpapers via Bing in a dynamic and random way (like on the lock screen) is available for desktop wallpaper! To access it, it will be enough to access the settings of Windows 11.
otherwiseTask Manager gets a new GUI to be, too, in line with the rest of the Windows 11 system. Even if it will still not be possible to access the Task Manager via a right click in the taskbar, it inherits some new features: a dark themeas well as’an “Efficiency” mode which allows you to manually reduce (via a right click) the consumption of an application or a process that would be too resource intensive.
Microsoft has integrated the application into Windows 11 Clipchampwhose objective is to allow you toedit video from windows. It is possible to take advantage of the free version of the application or to switch to the premium offer (11.99 euros per month) to unlock additional features. For example, the stock of royalty-free elements (music, images and videos) is more limited in the free version. The free version allows you to create projects in Full HD (1080p), like the paid version.
The other changes
The Redmond firm has made other changes to its system, which could be summarized with the following list:
- Applications “Do not disturb” et “Mode Focus” are now separated.
- AirPods headphones have better support, especially to have better audio quality during calls.
- The Dynamic Refresh Rate feature will support 120Hz more widely across the system and not just within certain applications.
- When using “Airplane Mode”, the user can decide to leave Bluetooth enabled, for example. Now Windows 11 will remember user preferences.
- Live captions are supported at the system level regardless of the source of the audio, including whether it is coming from a microphone. This feature does not require an internet connection, but currently only supports English.
- The narration system uses a more natural (and less robotic) voice, but again this is only available for English
- When information is copied to the clipboard, Windows may suggest actions. For example, create an event in Outlook if it is a date.
Windows 11 22H2 brings some new features, but it is above all an opportunity to finalize a little more the first version launched in October 2021, in particular on the design part where many elements benefit from a makeover. If you were hoping that Microsoft would lower its prerequisites for Windows 11, you failed, because there is no change at this level!
